Exploring the Depths of Our Digital Identity: A Call to Action

Have you ever paused to consider the nature of your digital identity? If you’re reading this, you already have one. Since the era of Web 2.0, our interaction with the internet has evolved beyond passive consumption. We’ve created accounts, chosen usernames, and set passwords—often as simple as “1234” or a family member’s name. This was the nascent stage of our digital identities, the key to our emails, social media, and online banking.
However, it’s a startling reality that many parts of the world still rely on these basic forms of digital identity, especially for governmental services online. This leaves individuals, organizations, and even governments vulnerable to cyber attacks. On the stage of the NFT Fest Lugano, I began referring to this as “The Global Digital Identity Crisis.” But this is merely the tip of the iceberg.
With the rapid advancements in AI, we’re on the cusp of a new era in cyber security, where distinguishing between machine and human becomes increasingly challenging. The EU Commission’s current stance on AI regulation is, frankly, ineffective and misses the core issue. Regulations impact law-abiding citizens, but others continue as they please. This underscores the need for a robust solution that links AI usage to its user, addressing the Global Digital Identity Crisis at its root.
I’m currently collaborating with the world’s foremost experts in digital identity and cyber security to tackle this issue. Unsurprisingly, these experts hail from Estonia (and one from US), a nation that began circumventing this crisis over two decades ago.
